Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born 7 October 1952 in Leningrad in the Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia) is a Russian politician who is the President of Russia since 7 May 2012. He was also the President of Russia, from 31 December 1999 to 7 May 2008, when he was succeeded by Dmitry Medvedev. During Dmitry Medvedev's presidency Putin was Prime Minister of Russia from 9 May 2008 to 7 May 2012. Between 2008 and 2012 he was also a leader of United Russia, which has its own majority in the State Duma, the Russian parliament. That post is now held by former president and current Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
