Short-eared Owl |
BIRD OF THE DAY
The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) has a very large range and is found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. It breeds in North America, the Caribbean, South America, North and Central Eurasia and the Pacific. Parts of the population are resident birds such as the South American subspecies, while others are migratory birds, including the populations of the nominate subspecies A. f flammeus that breed in North America and northern Eurasia. These migratory birds are wintering in the United States, Mexico, on scattered sites in Europe, North and Central Africa, Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
The Short-eared Owl hunts for the most at dusk and in the morning, and is thus more active during the day than the other owls. It mainly captures small rodents but can also catch other small animals and birds and their chicks.
The Short-eared Owl nests on the ground.
