Mahatma Gandhi was born October 2, 1869 in Porbandar in Gujarat, died (murdered) January 30, 1948 in New Delhi, India, was an Indian lawyer, politician and spiritual leader. He was a prominent figure in the Indian independence aspirations of the British Empire. Gandhi came from a wealthy merchant family, and trained as a lawyer in the UK. He lived for a time in South Africa before he definitely returned to India in 1914. His advocacy of non-violence principle of satyagraha could not completely prevent that protest initiated by him sometimes turned violent. Gandhi practiced and advocated non-violence and truth in all situations. He lived simply and organized an Ashram, Sabarmati Ashram, which was self-sufficient for their needs. He made his own clothes - the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with hand spun. He lived on a simple vegetarian diet.
