Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra) nest in the northern regions of Europe and western Asia. The American Melanitta americana (Black Scoter) is sometimes considered a subspecies of Melanitta nigra.The Scoter's diet consists of crustaceans and molluscs, such as mussels. In freshwater, it also takes insects and small fish.
