Little Grebe

The Little Grebe(Tachybaptus ruficollis) has a large global range and breed in Europe, Central Asia and south to New Guinea and in much of Africa, both in north and south of the Sahara. Birds that nest in water that freezes in winter are migratory birds and move to the coast or lakes.

The Little Grebe is bound to water and is only on land during the breeding season. It breeds in areas of dense vegetation in freshwater lakes, ponds and ditches. Like all grebes they place the nest near the shore. The nest is attached to plants and is able to flow.

The Little GrebeIt is an excellent swimmer and seek their food by diving for small fish, molluscs and aquatic insects.
