Boreal Owl |
BIRD OF THE DAY
The Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus) is also known as the Tengmalm's Owl after Swedish naturalist Peter Gustaf Tengmalm. The Boreal owl nests in dense coniferous or mixed forests of northern Eurasia and North America, and in mountain ranges such as the Alps and the Rocky Mountains.Tengmalm's Owl is only active at night and rest during the day, preferably inside a dense spruce.
This little owl takes small prey, particularly voles, wood mice, lemmings and other small mammals, but also small birds and large insects.
