| Purple Sandpiper |
The Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima) breeds on the tundra in northwestern Europe, northern Siberia and its islands, including the Arctic islands in Canada and the coastal areas of Greenland and also in the Faroe Islands, Scotland and Svalbard. Most of the world population of purple sandpiper is migratory, but some populations will stay in their breeding areas all year round.
The Purple Sandpiper nests on rocky places on the coast and by lakes on plateaus in the mountains.
In the breeding areas the Purple Sandpiper lives by flies, crustaceans and spiders, and seeds and buds of various plants. In winter, they look for food on rocky shores, mostly insects and mollusks, but also some plant parts.
